Why Cowhide Is So Controversial
It’s no secret that animal prints can hold a certain level of controversy, and cowhide is no exception.
In the fashion realm, cowhide was often sought after for its durability and practical nature. Over time, cowhide shifted from a reliable material to a symbol of artistic expression and luxury and became known more as a statement. Its earthy, natural tones allow it to pair with neutrals easily and can be a versatile asset.
However, many people question the ethics of using this print in fashion or decor, as traditional cowhide involves the use of a cow’s skin. Notably, for those who advocate for animal rights, the rising popularity of this design is a source of controversy. However, faux versions of the design are considered a friendlier alternative that doesn’t sacrifice style.

How Designers Feel About Cowhide Being the “New Neutral”
As cowhide is being dubbed the “new neutral,” our experts shared what draws them toward the print when decorating a space.
“I’ve always loved animal prints—they resonate with me on a very personal level,” says Paula Hospod, president at Aha Interiors. “There’s something instinctive about them, as if nature itself designed the perfect pattern. Cowhide, in particular, feels timeless; each one is unique yet balanced, never overly decorative.”
Despite its likely association with ranch-style or western design, cowhide has a unique effect and can blend seamlessly into a modern, neutral environment.
Dre Shapiro, principal interior designer of Dre Design, notes that it makes sense for cowhide to be considered a “new neutral” because it typically features shades of tan, brown, black, and white, which can easily work in a variety of color schemes.
“To me, a cowhide is a neutral—much like denim,” Shapiro says. “It’s versatile, timeless, and adaptable to almost any style.”
Shapiro also appreciates how cowhide can complement a modern, earthy, and organic aesthetic, offering warmth and texture that can be perceived as either elevated or casual, depending on the room’s intended purpose.
Leah Alexander, owner and principal interior designer at Beauty is Abundant, agrees that cowhide can work well in a space, but notes that not all styles and shades of cowhide are ideal.
“The cowhide rug, sometimes, with metallic flecks or in unnatural colors like we saw almost ten years ago—and I’m sure every couple of decades before that—fell from grace fast as far as I’m concerned,” she says.
However, she does believe cowhide has its place in home decor, provided it’s used thoughtfully.
How to Work Cowhide Into Your Space
Designers agree that while cowhide may be a “new neutral,” there are ways to go overboard. Below are a few ways to incorporate the design into your home.
Try a Large Rug
The most classic and popular way to use this print is as a rug. According to Alexander, large versions are the way to go if you have the room.
“The solid cowhide rug in as large a size as possible can be timeless and elevate a space,” she says. “Even then, I’d be mindful of it making a space feel horse stable chic or too ranch-leaning for a typical contemporary aesthetic.”
If a large rug isn’t an option, layering a smaller version of cowhide over a larger rug can create a unique look that can make the space feel upscale.
Accent With Small Pillows
Another easy way to incorporate cowhide into your space without overwhelming it? Accent pillows.
“What I’d gladly put in a project today is a neutral tan or caramel-colored cowhide lumbar pillow,” Alexander says.
With this print, a little can go a long way. A few accent pillows paired with other pillows in neutral tones, in solids or sleek stripes, can draw attention to the style without making it the focal point.
Use Cowhide as a Wall Art Piece
Cowhide can also be used as an artistic accent, either by mounting a large rug on the wall or placing it in a large frame as a statement piece. You can also opt to purchase small art prints of the design to display with other pieces of wall art.
