11 Popular Modern Home Design Trends That Gen Z’ers Can’t Stand

Gen Z’ers are on top of the latest trends — and of course, they have lots of opinions on them, too. While they have been behind some of the most viral trends, from fashion and beauty to lifestyle and home design, that doesn’t mean they love everything just because it’s modern.

So, we recently asked Gen Z’ers of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us the modern home design trends they hate, and they didn’t hold back. Here are the top trends they are not a fan of — even though they are incredibly popular today:

1.Concrete floors — “It’s so ugly and cold on the feet! You have to have rugs everywhere, or it will literally emit cold from below. It’s not an industrial warehouse; it’s a bloody home. And how do you clean in the cracks? Having your living room look like a sidewalk is not it.”

2.Modern architecture — “Those blocky, cubist houses. Give the place some soul, please.”

3.Open-concept homes — “Open concept with grey everything. I want walls and wood paneling, please!”

4.Minimalism — “The beige, greige, clean lines minimalism that has been trending in modern homes for a minute. Where is the lived-in feel, the color, and the decor with character? Viva la maximalism!”

“I hate minimalism. Please, for the love of god, put color in your homes.”

5.Wainscoting — “I hate it when people add wainscoting in their house to make it look old.”

6.White cabinets — “They get dirty with grease and food, so you always have to clean them. They also show fingerprints. Sigh, just go back to brown cabinets. Everything nowadays is the color white.”

7.All-white kitchens in general — “I hate white kitchens. They are extremely hard to keep clean and look plain and unoriginal. Bring color back to kitchens.”

8.Accented ceilings — “They are hideous, and altogether awful-looking. Plus, they are expensive.”

9.Smear brick — “It’s a trend that will look so dated within the decade. It’s not necessarily ugly — just a trend that applies to the entire exterior of your home. It’s also not easy to remove.”

10.Open-shelving in kitchens — “It attracts dirt and grease and needs high-maintenance cleaning.”

And finally…

11.Bathrooms with open-wall showers — “I HATE those open-wall showers. I feel like a lot of hotels do that nowadays. In warm climates, it’s fine, but it’s hard to keep a bathroom totally warm; I want to keep the warmth of the shower in with a curtain stuck to the walls or full glass doors. I hate feeling so exposed, too!”
