Following the latest trends is one method of home design — but increasingly, decorators are embracing the concept of intentional design, which focuses on things important to them in creating their dream home.
That will be just one of the topics in focus at the 2024 Calgary Fall Home Show Sept. 27–29 at the BMO Centre, as more than 200 exhibitors and experts help attendees achieve their home design, decor and renovation goals.

Britt Bengoechea, owner and principal designer at Reunion Interiors, says her goal when working with residential and commercial clients is very much in keeping with intentional design.
“It means stepping away from what’s trending and homing in on what’s authentic to the client. At the end of the day that’s what makes a difference: it’s not having something trendy but having something that reflects a person’s goals and their life.”
Bengoechea, who designed the Sleep Country Main Stage at this year’s Calgary Fall Home Show, says the idea is to make your home an enjoyable place you want to be in, rather than just repeating what others are doing.
She says that while the results of designing with intention can vary widely depending on the homeowners, there are several things she has noticed gaining in popularity.
First, Bengoechea says she is seeing a lot more colour this year after almost a decade of whites or greys being very prominent. Wallpaper is in, and so is colour drenching, where the walls, ceiling and trim in a room are painted the same colour but with varying sheens of paint.

Second, she says choosing sustainable products (even though they may cost more) has become more popular.
Third, there is an uptick in furniture with fewer clean lines and more wood-working and design touches like scallops.
“A lot of people are focusing on heirlooms,” says Bengoechea. “The antique markets are heating up because everyone wants that one piece that will last for years to come that has interest and will make a difference in a home.”
At the 2024 Calgary Fall Home Show, the Sleep Country Main Stage will be the venue for presentations by design experts and notable personalities, including Bryan Baeumler, the award-winning host of shows like Disaster DIY, Canada’s Handyman Challenge, House of Bryan, Bryan Inc. and, most recently, Island of Bryan.
Other speakers will include Karl Lohnes, Style at Homes contributing editor, who will cover the Top 5 Decorating Mistakes (and how to fix them); Alyssa McMasters from Let Me Introduce Yourself, discussing Renovation Wellness; Angie & Pam, the faces behind Tidy Matters Professional Organizing, talking about Decluttering For Downsizing or Renovating; Neil Harding from Sleep Country Canada, with a presentation called Let’s Talk About Sleep; and Brittany McNab from Fifteen Twelve Home Co. presenting Design Where You Are: Honouring the Environment, Culture and History of Where you Live.

Bengoechea says she personally loves attending the show with all the expert advice available and a variety of exhibitors on display.
“Each year I walk away with something valuable,” she says, “whether it’s learning something new or stumbling upon really beautiful products or a new business in this city.
“And it doesn’t matter if you’re a DIY-er or tradesperson or a homeowner, the show really has something for everybody.”
Some of the special features at the show include Tangled Tree Markets, showcasing dozens of locally made items, from luxurious textiles to stunning wall art and even hand-finished furniture.
The Ask Us Live! Booth will have Style at Home contributing editor Karl Lohnes providing advice for show attendees on anything from creating a dream room to choosing the right paint colour. Just bring your mood boards, paint swatches or floorplans and receive a one-on-one consultation for free.
Stop by the dreamy bedroom display Homestead Haven by White House on the Prairie Designs and learn how to transform a home into a reflection of your life’s journey.
The Home Show will also feature Paint with Purpose, where local and emerging artists guided by local muralist and illustrator Rachel Lyon will paint eight-foot canvases into vibrant murals for donation to local charities.
