Is There Really Such a Thing as Timeless Interior Design? Here’s the Designer Verdict

Curating a beautiful home is an investment—and nothing is more frustrating than going all-in on a particular design style just to see it being described as “dated” a few years later. We can all conjure to mind the quintessential suburban early aughts decor—and even more contemporary trends like millennial grey and shiplap have been labeled as past trends despite being all the rage a few short years ago.

That’s why trying to steer clear of going all-in on contemporary trends might be the key to giving your home decor a bit of a longer shelf life. Timeless interior design requires a bit more planning, and more personality, but it’s the best way to go if you want to truly love your space for years to come.

“I absolutely believe ‘timeless’ home décor is possible with the right balance of classic foundations, thoughtful layering, and personal storytelling,” shares Pelar Fullilove, principal designer and founder of 37th Burleigh Interior Design, adding that with the right game plan you can trend-proof your space and creat a style that will transcend time without worrying about accidentally dating your decor prematurely.

Here’s how to trend-proof your home and create a truly timeless interior design:

Start with a neutral foundation.

According to Fullilove, timeless spaces are built on classic color palettes—think whites, creams and rich earth tones. “These hues create a calm, versatile backdrop that won’t feel dated as trends shift,” she explains.

Invest in quality over quantity.

“Choose well-crafted furniture and finishes that will last,” suggests Fullilove. “Solid wood pieces, natural stone, and timeless textiles like linen or wool not only elevate a space but age beautifully over time.”

Incorporate architectural details.

Molding, wainscoting, arched doorways, and built-ins never go out of style, says Fullilove. “These elements add depth, character, and a sense of permanence to any home.”

Mix old with new.

“Layering vintage or antique pieces with contemporary items brings soul and dimension to a space,” shares Fullilove. She suggests adding something like a vintage mirror or heirloom table paired with modern lighting in order to strike that “collected over time” look that’s inherently timeless.

Avoid overly trendy finishes.

While it’s fun to experiment, Fullilove suggests limiting bold trends to easily changeable accents like pillows or paint. “Keep core elements like flooring, tile, and cabinetry in more classic styles to ensure longevity,” she adds.

Stick with what you really love.

“Personally, I think the best way to achieve a timeless design is to buy what you truly love and let that inform the style of your space,” says Niki Conte, owner and principal designer at Northshire Living. “There will be some things you love that don’t make sense with the rest, but for the most part, I find people tend to gravitate towards decor and furnishings that are cohesive, even if they don’t quite see the continuing thread between them.”

Consider organic additions.

“Incorporating natural materials such as reclaimed wood, natural stone, and clay can create an organic, textural backdrop that warms the room with its inherent character and ages gracefully over time,” explains Marta Cicero, owner and interior designer at Marta Cicero Design. “These elements not only add visual interest but also resonate with a sustainable design ethos, ensuring that the space remains inviting and environmentally responsible for years to come. In essence, timeless design not only exudes enduring elegance but also champions sustainable style.”

Let the outdoors in.

Timeless spaces often have soul. Incorporate natural light as much as possible and don’t overlook adding plants into your space,” says Emmy-Award winning celebrity designer James Pearse Connelly. “A connection to nature brings calm and longevity, and grounds a space in something that never goes out of style.”

Don’t overdo it.

Seymen Usta, founder and CEO of Modern Chandelier suggests prioritizing substance over solutions — not overthinking, and letting fantastic pieces age over time instead of forcing them. “Most importantly, ageless design is about recognizing when an area is complete—substance over excess,” he adds.

Opt for white finishes.

Jone Bremer, founder of Jone Bremer Interiors says that when it comes to larger renovation projects, it’s best to opt for white fixtures rather than choosing color, especially if you’re thinking of the resell value of your home. “I always advise clients to keep their permanent fixtures in their homes neutral such as tile, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, countertops,” explains Bremer. “Neutrals and whites stay in vogue forever.”
