Should You Light A Christmas Tree From The Top Or Bottom?

Whether you are cutting down a tree at the farm or hauling out a box from the attic, getting your Christmas tree set up is a holiday highlight. Nothing says Christmas quite like decorating the house – and tree. But when it comes to stringing up the lights, getting every bulb lit and put onto the tree can be stress inducing and may have you wondering – should you light a Christmas tree from the top or bottom?

Should You Light a Christmas Tree From The Top or Bottom?

Christmas trees should be lit from the bottom up, says Rose.

“We suggest starting from the bottom, whether you have a real Christmas tree or an artificial one,” Rose tells Southern Living. “Starting from the bottom gives you easier access to the power outlet and allows you to layer the lights more evenly. Additionally, this method often leaves an available outlet at the top of the tree for a tree topper that requires a plug.”

The Best Way To Light an Artificial Tree

For artificial Christmas trees, the best way to string lights onto an unlit tree is to do so section by section, says Rose.

“We recommend starting from the inner branches to the outer branches and beginning with the bottom section,” she says. “This birds-eye-view allows for a super easy stringing process, ensuring you don’t miss any spots for a brilliantly lit tree.”

Is There A Difference When Lighting Faux Vs. Real Tree?

Yes, there are differences to keep in mind.

Real: In real Christmas trees, the branches are typically less flexible, hence more difficult to manipulate, and the sap can make the process messy.

“Real trees can also dry out over time, increasing the risk of fire hazards,” Rose says.

Artificial: While artificial trees offer more flexibility for shaping and decorating, some consumers may not like the upfront cost which can sometimes be more expensive.

4 Tips For Lighting Christmas Trees

Rose says that no matter what type of tree you are using, there are a couple tips to be mindful of while lighting and decorating.

Always start with the lights turned on.

“This way, you can see exactly where you are placing them and ensure an even distribution of light,” she explains. “Plus, it guarantees that all of your lights are working before you put in the effort.”

Work from the inner branches to the outer branches.

“Wrap each branch individually with the light strings in a circular motion for the fullest and brightest effect,” she says.

Pre-strung lights on artificial trees are incredibly convenient.

“For safety just be sure that it’s low voltage,” Rose explains. “It really is that simple, no hassle with stringing lights yourself. Just set up your tree and enjoy the perfect glow.”

Make sure lights are compatible with the space (indoor vs. outdoor) and that the luminosity matches the power voltage or surge protector.

“This precaution is crucial, because improper voltage can lead to unsafe conditions,” Rose says. “We highly recommend using low-voltage lights.”
