The 11 Most Comfortable Accent Chairs, According to Designers

Style & Shape
Accent chairs, like all furniture, come in a wide range of styles and shapes with varying degrees of comfort and functionality. While some chairs are made to be cozy for sitting in and sinking into, others are more decorative. “Some have wood or metal frames, while others are fully upholstered,” says Kraiem. “Some armchairs are comfy and wide, while others can be more sculptural and visually interesting. You can strike a balance by selecting a comfortable chair in a statement pattern, texture, or colored fabric.”
Consider your home decor aesthetic and opt for a chair that fits nicely into your personal style. If your home reflects a mid-century modern look, aim to find a chair that makes sense in your space. A traditional chair with roll arms and a skirt might look out of place. Keep in mind that the shape of the chair doesn’t necessarily dictate how comfortable it is. For example, the Tongue Chair has an extremely artistic, sculptural look, but also happens to be considered one of the most comfortable chairs.
Color
When it comes to choosing a color for your accent chair, there are no hard and fast rules. “It depends on what you are looking to achieve with the space,” says Marshall. “I’ve done rooms where have upholstered every piece of furniture in the same fabric. As long as the pieces are different shapes and materials, this can achieve a super chic look.” Conversely, if you want to add a pop of color to your space, you should opt for an accent chair that has a bold print or color. The beauty of an accent chair is you can play with color without making an enormous commitment.
Size
Accent chairs range in size, but on average they tend to be roughly 30 inches by 30 inches. “However, depending on functionality and available space, they can be smaller or larger,” says Kraiem. “Larger chairs tend to be more comfortable and offer better support, while smaller chairs are ideal for tight spaces or as occasional seat.”
Consider the area where you intend to put the chair, and make sure to measure before investing in the piece. You don’t want to bring it home to discover it makes your room feel overstuffed or, even worse, doesn’t fit at all. Remember, you don’t have to have the biggest chair to make the biggest statement.
Price
The price range for accent chairs varies quite a bit, and it’s important to establish a budget before you begin shopping. “You can find good quality accent chairs are any price; recovering the seat of a vintage arm chair takes less than a yard of fabric and you can usually DIY with a staple gun!” says Marshall.
While you can certainly shop at budget-friendly stores like Amazon or Target, investing in a higher-quality chair will ultimately mean it looks better, lasts longer, and most importantly, is more comfortable. “$1,300 to $2,000 is typical for a high-quality accent chair from a retail store,” says Kraiem. While you can certainly spend more, that price range usually means you’re getting a great balance of style, quality, comfort.
